Honningsvågarane berga båt og folk

Ut over natta tiltok stormen. Kl 7.00 neste morgon kom

The Honningsvågars saved the boat and the people

On 9 July 1888, the yacht "The Family", led by skipper Walnum, left Lofoten with a cargo of fish for Bergen. Off Eltvika in Stad, they were attacked by fog and came in between the surf where they ran aground.

After a while, they managed to get off the ship with their own help, but it then turned out that the ship was leaking. A boat with 7 men from Eltvik came to their rescue and got a rope on board which was taken ashore from the yacht's stern in order to secure it from being thrown into the surf. It was then decided to abandon the vessel and go ashore as neither the anchor ahead nor the rope that had been placed ashore could be trusted. It was then 12 in the evening.

At approximately At 03.00 that night, a boat with 4 men arrived from Honningsvåg and found the yacht without a crew. There was still a strong onshore wind and the sea partly broke over the vessel. They then went on board and found it necessary to secure the schooner ahead with additional mooring.

They then found a dingy on board and managed to put it out to the east of the waves. Overnight the storm intensified. At 7.00 the next morning came
the skipper and crew on board again, and one of the people from Eltvik with two men from the yacht was ordered to row north to pick up a steamer. People were also sent to Honningsvåg for larger boats to unload the cargo, as the yacht kept taking in water.

In addition to the people already on board from Honningsvåg, 15 more men arrived with 3 large boats. More mooring lines secured the boat and part of the cargo was taken ashore and stored in a sea house in Honningsvåg. Further unloading was postponed as the storm continued the next day, so nothing could be done until the evening when 19 men from Honningsvåg rowed out to yacht.

10 men went on board to pump, and the water was then partly above the floor in the cabin and cabin. A couple of the moorings had been damaged but were subsequently repaired.

Sunday morning the wind decreased a bit and at At 6.00 the requisitioned steamer "Terje Viken" arrived from Ålesund. The waves were still great, so the steamship captain did not think it advisable to engage in any towing then.

In the afternoon at 6.00 the honningvågars rowed out again to yacht to pump and prepare for towing. First at At 2 am the steamer could tow the yacht into the harbor in Haugsholmen. The yacht was thus saved.

After this incident, claims were made for salvage wages both from the elt vikars, the honningsvågars and the steamship and the case was taken to court where the Supreme Court decided that the size of the salvage wages should be 9,000 kroner. The value of yacht with chargo was NOK 26,824.

The majority of the salvage wages went to the honningsvågars, as what they performed was associated with danger and effort. But the people from Eltvik also received a significant part of the salvage wages.

The distribution was as follows: the honningvågars got 5,000 kroner, the eltvikars 1,800 kroner and the steamship which, after all, got the yacht off the ground and towed it safely into port got 2,200 kroner.
