1. step: Johan and Nikoline's children

This page is called the first step on this family website, but it is of course not the very first beginning of our genealogy three at the Honningvaag side. The picture to the right is Johan Sakarias Elias Gulliksen Honningsvåg (1852-1918) and Nikoline Adrianne Nilsdatter Sandvik (1853-1904). When Nikoline died as 51 years old, Johannes later married Hanne Eltvik. Hannes full name is: Johanne Wilhelmsdatter Eltvik, married name Honningsvåg.

It's first step here, because we can see this couple as the start of the families that come together in reunions every third year.

Each siblings name is given a specific color. This color will follow each of the siblings families down the following steps. We are all related to the couple you se on the picture to the right here. This couple is chosen as start here because one or more steps backwards in family, would have been a big challenge in number of names.

Head picture shows Johan and Nikolines oldest son, Nikolai, in front of the house at Honningsvaag farm, circa 1950.

Johan was later married to Hanna Eltvik Honningsvaag, and they got two sons, William and Anfinn.

Here is the registered genealogy of our family
Johan and Nikoline's six children and Johan and Hanna's two children:

Gina Johanne Tomina Honningsvaag Fluevåg
Nikolai Honningsvåg
Gullik (Gullich)

Anna Honningsvåg Erickson

Johan Honningsvåg (John Johnson in Can/USA)
Julius Andreas Johansen Honningsvåg

William Nikolai Johan Johansson Honningsvåg
and

This is Jo-Johan Honningsvåg, whole name is Johannes Sakarias Elias Gullikson Honningsvåg, and his first wife Nikoline Sandvik Honningsvåg. Probably together with their oldest son, Nikolai. They lived at Jo-garden, the farm that before it was devided into four sections had the name Indre Honningsvåg. Today the old farm Jo-garden, is divided into the smaler farms Jogarden, Joheim, Fagerheim and Fagervoll.

Died as child, and it may be because of that Petters older brother Nikolai called his oldest son Petter (1900 - 1934). Johan Honningsvaag 1892 - 1978,
changed name to
John Johnson in Amerika

Johan was the second youngest of the Honningsvaag siblings after Johan and Nikolina.

Johan emigrated from Honningsvaag at the same time as his sisters Anna and Gina. He went to Canada in 1910 and changed his name to John Johnson. He lived at Irma AB for a while, but moved to Vancouver where he lived to be about 86 years old.

He worked as a steelworker/bridgebuilder all his life and was foreman for Dominion Bridge Co.
John worked on many large bridges in Western USA and Canada. He married Alice but they had no children. Born 1892, died 1978.

Petra Honningsvaag, John was uncle to her father Gudmund Honningsvaag, told summer of 2014 that se remembered Johan visiting Honningsvaag in 1947 or -48 or -49. She's not sure of the exact year, but means to remember that she was about 10-12 years old then. She remembers Johan well, because he stayed with them a whole winter. And it was a very snowy winter.

As far as Petra knows, Johan later in life fell down from a bridge or a building in Amerika. He was so injured that he sat in a Wheel Chair the rest of his life, and many years in a nursing home. He died there, as far as Petra knows.

PictureJulius, photo taken in the early 1920's. He was an officer in the Army Fortress Artillery after military academy.
Julius Andreas Johansen Honningsvaag
Husband of Solveig Eugenie Nærsnes Honningsvaag
Father of
Karl Fredrik Johan Honningsvaag

This is what Julius' grandson Anders Honningsvåg tells about him:
Julius Andreas Johansen was born on 20 December 1893. He was the youngest of Nikolina’s childer, and he was 8 years old when she died.

I can not remember my grandfather
Julius told me much of his childhood. But it was said that his parents among other things were running a small local store when Julius was young.
Lloyd stated that Johan stocked some fishing supplies for the village. Perhaps there also was something else for sale on Jo-garden.

Grandpah Julius told me that he as a youth was doing some fishing, but his grandmother insisted that he should  be sent on the ”gymnas” (high school) as he was doing well at school. This must have been a rural high school somewhere on the west coast of Norway.
After high school his plan was to study social economics in Oslo.

He realized along that road that this was economically impossible, and he began instead on education in the Army to become an army officer. This was some time before the outbreak of WWI.
About this time he also started using the surename Honningsvaag instead of Johansen.

My father is baptized Karl Fredrik Johan Honningsvaag (b. 14 Dec 1927, at Laksevåg, outside Bergen). The names Karl Johan is certainly renaming after his grandfathers on both sides.

Julius and his wife Solveig had two children, but their firstborn died shortly before my father was born. He was also baptized Karl Fredrik Johan, and my father took over this name, as was the custom at the time.
I think the oldest son was born about two years before my father, but I’m not sitting on some secure dates.

After Military Academy Julius served in the Army Fortress Artillery.
When my father was born in 1927, Julius was stationed at Kvarven Fort in Laksevåg, close to Bergen.
Later he served some years at Agdenes Fortifications in Mid-Norway, at the start of the Trondheimsfjord. He lived at the place Hasselvika, by Hysnes Fort.

From 1933 until the outbreak of WWII he was at Håøya Fort outside Tonsberg, southnwest of Oslo.

He was imprisoned in Germany most of the war, and went in the civilian jobmarked after liberation. He worked as CFO in a Tonsberg firm, and

Together with his wife Solveig he lived on Nøtterøy for his lifetime.
