Mary Ruth tells stories from her life
This is a story Carol wrote Sunday 20th August 2017 after her mother was telling from her time at the Erickson hjemsted:
Nancy and I had fun with Grandma Ruth tonight looking at these photos again, and this one really got her talking.
She remembered the thick frost on the inside of the boys bedroom windows (the two upstairs windows), and mama's bedroom was below.
She remembered being outside when John was born, and they were told the stork brought the babies. She saw the crack in the glass of mama's bedroom window and thought for sure the stork had made that crack.
She remembered playing with Elma out in the trees south of the house, they would have tea parties and set up old apple crates for tables. And she remembered how hard the boys would work in the fields, and they would come in and dump the dirt out of their shoes and the girls were expected to clean up after them.
Lots of fun hearing her talk about the old days!
And the screened porch on the side of the house covered with vines, the kids would climb up to see the robin eggs in the nests. She said they loved that porch, so nice and cool in the summers.

This is a story Carol Hudson wrote after talking with her mother, Mary Ruth, Monday 6th November 2017:
Carol Hudsen tells that she Monday 6th November 2017 spent some time tonight with Grandma Ruth Erickson-Curtis and she told her another story.
When she was between 18-20 and living in Edmonton she decided to go home to the farm for her parent's anniversary in February to surprise them.
She took the bus and arrived in Irma late on a Saturday night.
Usually someone from the farm was in town on a Saturday night but this time there was no one. Luckily Torlief Larsen (Nan's future husband) was there and he said he would give her a ride to the farm if she waited for him to finish playing pool.
They got on the road close to midnight but when they came to the dip in the road by the lake, he could not go through because of the snow. There was no other choice but for her to walk the rest of the way.
She described the snow, it had the hard crust that you had to break through and she was so glad she had worn boots. She was all alone on that road at midnight carrying her suitcase and a tulip plant wrapped in plastic. And then she heard the coyotes howling nearby.
She was afraid but of course she made it home. Her mama woke up when she heard the door and got her warmed up.
She has never forgotten that scary walk home at midnight. I can't imagine!
